Sleepover Stories

A nine-year-old student started creative writing lessons with me.  His father said, “he does not enjoy writing stories.”

Since our first lesson he has been inspired to write, starting with an intriguing photo (which I took myself) of a very fascinating insect.

From then on my student has become excited to write and read his stories to me.  Recently, he told me that he had had a sleepover with his friends for the weekend.  During the weekend, he proudly read ALL the stories he has written (both in my class and for homework) to all his friends.

He dedicated one of these stories to his little sister.  I asked her what she thought of her story and she declared, “I love it, but we haven’t made the marshmallows yet.”  He had also included in his story how to make marshmallows and toast them. Yum.

He also enjoyed reading his stories to his family, and has had wonderful feedback from them.

I am delighted with this as he is now very confident with his writing, and in his last story he wrote so freely that he wrote over 1,000 words, effortlessly.  He then told me he dedicated another two and a half hours to typing up his cherished creation.
